Subject: Formal Complaint Regarding Detention and Treatment at Mumbai Airport
Dear Sirs
I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding an incident that occurred during my recent visit to Mumbai Airport on September 22nd, between approximately 20:45 and 21:30. I was detained under suspicion of smuggling, with varying claims made about the nature of the suspicion, initially regarding phones and later regarding gold.
During this time, I was informed that I had to undergo an X-ray examination, with the alternative being a court appearance the following day. After the X-ray confirmed that everything was clear, I requested documentation to substantiate the searches conducted, which included the removal of my pants, an X-ray, and examination of my stomach.
I was disheartened to learn that no documentation would be provided. I expressed my concerns about the nature and necessity of the X-ray, especially considering that the customs officer in charge chose to leave the room during the process, while the attendant was equipped with a lead-proof vest.
When I requested the names of the officers involved so that I could file a formal complaint, a gentleman in a white shirt informed me that he could act as he pleased and was under no obligation to provide such information. Additionally, when I inquired about the complaints mechanism, I was told that there was no formal process in place and that lodging a complaint would lead to complications during my future travels to India.
The entire experience was extremely degrading, damaging to my character, and showed a complete disregard for my well-being. I travel to India frequently for personal reasons, as my flights are significantly more affordable if I travel via Mumbai often saving 35%, and I value the opportunity to reconnect with my family.
I believe that for all stop-and-search procedures, proper documentation should be provided, including the reasons for the search and the names of the officers involved. Furthermore, I was never asked about the purpose of my frequent travels to India, which would have been a reasonable inquiry.
As a UK citizen who travels globally, I have never encountered such a distressing situation. I had hoped to promote the notion that outdated practices were a thing of the past in India, but my recent experience suggests otherwise. It felt as though the intention behind the incident was more about extorting money than ensuring security.
I urge you to address these issues to prevent future occurrences and to uphold the dignity and rights of travelers.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your prompt response.
Sincerely,
Sarfraaz Patel
