On 2/27/23,
I checked my baggage at the Emirates checkpoint and proceeded to the TSA checkpoint.
After placing my things on the conveyor belt, I walked through the security machine and then into the private search area with a female TSA guard behind the curtain. She then asked me (someone who identifies and is clearly a woman) if I am a woman or a man. I was shocked and could not properly process what she was suggesting. She was suggesting that I could be a man. She then APOLOGIZED and said that they have to ask this because they’ve been having a problem with men posing as women. I was still shocked and flabbergasted but I tried to understand. Because I’m traveling in a group with 3 other women, I asked them if they were also asked if they were a man or a woman and they promptly said no. This blatant discrimination based on subjective judgment of TSA guard personnel will not stand and is not fair to people such as myself or any woman for that matter who is discriminated or judged by her appearance alone. To mediate this blatant discrimination, I strongly suggest asking ALL WOMEN if they are female or male so as to avoid use of subjective judgement by TSA workers to classify who they feel could be women or men. I’m calling these behaviors to actionable change to maintain the dignity of us, the citizens who utilize Emirates’ services.
