I had a long layover in Mumbai (Feb 26), and went to the Information desk near P6 at the airport for recommendations about a short-term hotel. I thought there would be a price list of hotels (as was at the Shanghai airport) that have been *vetted by the airport* and were free of scams or undisclosed pricing, but instead, the information desk person called up an individual known as ‘Kunal’ who quoted me some prices over the phone. Rs. 4000, he said, for a two-star hotel. He then came to pick me up (with the information desk person escorting me), but did not give me the name of the hotel even at the time of pickup and did not disclose that the pricing would be higher than he said.
At the dropoff, a GST of 12% was added by the hotel they took me to (Koshya Suites) which was not included in the quoted price. After that, if it was not enough, Kunal demanded an extra Rs. 2100 from me as a fee (which of course was not mentioned at the time of quoting the original price and even at the time of picking me up). The hotel would not let me go to my room until I paid Kunal’s fee, even though I already paid for the hotel!! I was effectively held hostage by the entire group until I paid this additional fee, making the total cost overall 50% higher than what I originally agreed to. With a flight to catch later, I did not have time for any altercation, and I paid Kunal Rs. 1650 rather than risk any further trouble in my last few hours in India.
The hotel also does not even have bottled water in the room, and the sheets are not clean.
The information desk person (a tall fellow) connected me to this scammer Kunal, who has this well-practiced scam of overcharging people departing India for overseas flights by holding them hostage. I thought that the information desk had vetted such recommendations. I believe this is a serious matter, and is even worthy of police investigation.
