Needed a human moment at the Mumbai T2 washroom this morning and was disheartened to find a member of the cleaning staff seated inside the washroom eating her breakfast!
Even though the area was clean (thanks to her!!), this place sees a lot of traffic (and well, smells like a loo) so it was upsetting to see this woman eat inside the washroom! I asked her what the deal was and she politely said that they are only given a 10 min break and the closest facility (that is a proper break area) is situated too far to make it back in time. She mentioned how this is routine practice for her and her fellow colleagues and didn’t seem to be too perturbed by it. Still doesn’t make it ok.
Top dollar has been spent sprucing up this airport and more attention needs to be paid to the cleaning staff working tirelessly to keep the facilities clean. In all the airports I’ve transited through, T2/Indian airports are the only ones where the washroom is constantly manned by a member of staff who cleans the cubicles after every use/every few uses. That’s a ridiculously tough job so the least they should get is a proper break *away* from the loos. I hope my message is taken seriously and that break times are improved with greater access to proper facilities for the staff. I will be following up to see if changes have been implemented.
